Do I have
anxiety?
Are you familiar with the sensation of a racing heart, the knot that tightens in your stomach or the relentless thoughts that seem to play on an endless loop? Do you find yourself second-guessing your abilities, always on high alert or struggling to find peace amidst the chaos of your mind? If so, you're not alone.
Anxiety—a common yet devastating mental health disorder—can be incredibly intrusive, influencing your mood, thoughts, behavior and emotions. It frequently causes intense or persistent worry in situations that can end up affecting your job or your relationships, and primarily, your overall satisfaction in life.
Anxiety can be an intricate companion that weaves its way into the fabric of our lives, often leaving us questioning our own experiences. The roots of anxiety are multifaceted, often stemming from genetics, stress, environmental factors or a blend of these elements.
Thankfully, anxiety treatment can alleviate symptoms, fostering resilience and enabling individuals to fully experience and embrace life.

The etiology of anxiety involves a complex interplay between nature and nurture. Genetic predispositions can contribute to an individual's susceptibility to anxiety disorders, as certain inherited traits may affect the brain's response to stress and threat. However, genetics alone cannot fully explain anxiety. Environmental factors, such as early life experiences, upbringing, and social interactions, also play a pivotal role in shaping anxiety responses.
-
Childhood experiences can leave an indelible mark on one's psychological well-being, including the development of anxiety. Traumatic events, neglect or insecure attachments during early formative years can contribute to the heightened sensitivity to stress and the manifestation of anxiety symptoms later in life. These experiences shape the neural circuits responsible for processing emotions and stress responses, predisposing individuals to anxiety disorders.
-
Anxiety can also be learned through observation and conditioning. If we grow up in an environment where anxiety is prevalent or if we witness caregivers displaying anxious behaviors, we may internalize these responses as the norm. Over time, this learned behavior becomes deeply ingrained, leading to the development of anxiety patterns that persist into adulthood.
-
The intricate workings of the brain and its intricate chemistry are integral to understanding anxiety. Neurotransmitters like serotonin, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and norepinephrine play a significant role in regulating mood, emotions, and the body's stress response. Imbalances in these neurotransmitters can disrupt the delicate equilibrium, potentially contributing to the onset or exacerbation of anxiety symptoms.
-
Our thoughts and perceptions can significantly influence anxiety. Negative thinking patterns, catastrophic thinking, and excessive worry can contribute to the maintenance of anxiety disorders. The way we interpret and assign meaning to situations, events and our own abilities can fuel anxiety, amplifying our sense of threat and danger.
You might already have a good idea of a specific time and place that could have triggered anxiety, or you may have no idea where it came from. Either way, I will work with you to decode the chain of events that got you where you are, pinpoint the origin of these thoughts and feelings, and discover the triggers creating this anxiety for you now.

Yes, lifestyle changes can make a significant difference in managing anxiety. Adopting a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise, balanced nutrition, sufficient sleep, stress reduction techniques and engaging in activities that bring joy and relaxation can positively impact anxiety symptoms. Additionally, managing stress, setting boundaries, fostering social connections and practicing self-care are crucial aspects of holistic anxiety treatment.
-
Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy provides a unique lens through which anxiety can be understood and addressed. In the context of IFS, anxiety is viewed as a protective response originating from “parts” of the internal system that hold certain beliefs, emotions and experiences. Some parts may carry anxiety as a means of protection, attempting to keep the individual safe from perceived threats. These parts may manifest as fearful, worried or hyper-vigilant aspects of the self.
In IFS therapy, the therapist guides the client in establishing a dialogue between the anxious parts and the Self. This process involves fostering a sense of curiosity and openness towards these parts, allowing them to express their concerns, fears and intentions. Through this exploration, the therapist helps the client build a relationship of trust and understanding with their anxiety parts, eventually allowing them to unburden and integrate within the system in a more adaptive and helpful way.

As much as we don’t like saying this—it depends. There are a lot of factors that impact how long anxiety treatment takes to see results. From the first session, we’ll work with you to make sure you leave with some new skills you can work on at home.
However, the time it will take for you to start feeling better will depend on how long you’ve been dealing with anxiety and how dedicated you are to working on treating anxiety.

Holistic anxiety treatment can be highly effective for many individuals. By addressing the underlying causes of anxiety and taking the time to listen to each client, it aims to provide long-term relief and enhance overall wellness. However, the effectiveness may vary from person to person, and it is essential to work closely with healthcare professionals to develop an individualized treatment plan.
