A woman is sitting with her head in her hands in need of therapy for depression

Whether you feel a sense of despair and emptiness weighing you down, struggle to make it through the day without heading back to bed, or feel stuck and unmotivated to seek out the life you want for yourself, brighter days are ahead once you begin therapy for depression.

Do you ever feel empty, sad, or unmotivated out of the blue?

Sadness is a feeling we all experience at some point in our lives—it is a perfectly normal emotion. But when those feelings become too frequent and intense that they prevent you from living your life to the fullest—when it becomes a crushing weight that can negatively impact your job, friendships, relationships, and quality of life—therapy for depression may be beneficial.

You can reclaim your life from its current state. Working with La Tanya Wallace, Board-Certified Psychiatric, Family Nurse Practitioner and Naturopathic Clinician located in the Banker’s Hill Neighborhood of San Diego can help you find your way.

Expertly blending holistic therapies like EMDR and IFS and naturopathic remedies with medical interventions, NP Wallace can help you find your way through depression to the life you want for yourself.

What does depression feel like?

In the depths of depression, it can feel as though joy and hope have become distant echoes, drowned out by an unrelenting chorus of sadness and emptiness. Our passions and interests lose their vibrancy, and the once-simple acts of getting out of bed or making decisions become monumental tasks.

The impact of depression reaches beyond our individual experiences. It casts a long shadow over our relationships, often leaving us feeling isolated and disconnected from those we love. It can strain our ability to perform at work, dimming our productivity and stealing our sense of fulfillment. The relentless fatigue and lack of energy can seem insurmountable, leaving us trapped in a cycle of despair.

Yet, it is important to remember that we are not defined by our depression. We are resilient beings capable of healing and rediscovering the beauty that exists in life. While the roots of depression may be multifaceted, the path to recovery is illuminated by the compassion and support of others.

Unmasking the

symptoms of depression

Depression can manifest in a multitude of ways, so it will look a little different for everyone. Depression can occur a single time due to a traumatic event or it can be an ongoing struggle.

    • Feeling sad, lonely, worthless, empty, angry, or ashamed

    • Angry outbursts and easily irritated over typically small matters

    • Sleep problems

    • Feeling constantly tired and unmotivated

    • Loss of energy

    • Loss of appetite

    • Anxiety

    • Slow and sluggish movement

    • Struggling with thoughts of suicide or death

The origins of depression are complex, involving factors such as genetics, stress, environmental influences, or a combination thereof.

    • A death in the family

    • Witnessing a traumatic event

    • Experiencing a traumatic event

    • Loss of a job

    • Death of a friend or acquaintance

    • Death of a spouse/partner

    • Financial stress

    • A health scare

When depression does rear its ugly head, the right treatment means everything.

Am I broken?

No, you are not broken. It's important to remember that experiencing depression or any mental health challenge does not mean that you are broken or fundamentally flawed as a person. Depression is a complex and multifaceted condition that can affect anyone, regardless of their background or strengths. It is not a reflection of your worth or value as an individual. It is a real and valid struggle that many people face, and seeking help and support is a courageous step towards healing and well-being.

Just as physical health can fluctuate and require care, so too can mental health. With the right support, treatment, and self-care, it is possible to manage and overcome depression. You have the capacity to heal, grow, and find joy and fulfillment in life.

You are deserving of compassion, understanding, and support. Reach out to trusted individuals, seek professional help, and remember that there is hope and light even in the midst of darkness. You are not broken, but rather on a journey of healing and self-discovery.

Common Questions About Holistic Depression Treatment

  • Depression looks different from person to person and you can expect that our sessions will be similarly varied.

I will ask you many questions to gain clarity on how long you’ve been struggling with depression as well as get information from you on how depression impacts various areas of your life such as your job, your home life, your friendships, your relationships, and so on. Once I have this information, I can work with you to develop a holistic depression treatment plan that is suited for you.

  • From an Internal Family Systems (IFS) perspective, depression arises when certain parts of the internal system become burdened, overwhelmed, or trapped in negative emotions or beliefs. These burdened parts may hold pain, shame, self-criticism, or other distressing emotions and thoughts. They may also carry traumatic experiences or unmet needs from the past.

IFS therapy aims to identify and understand these burdened parts with compassion and curiosity. The therapist works with the client to establish a trusting and collaborative relationship, creating a safe space for the exploration of their internal system. Through dialogue and guided visualization, the therapist helps the client connect with their parts and develop a deeper understanding of their origins, roles, and needs.

The goal of IFS therapy is not to eliminate parts or eradicate depression but rather to restore balance and harmony within the internal system. As the client develops a compassionate relationship with their parts and integrates them into a cohesive whole, depressive symptoms may gradually diminish. The focus is on fostering Self-leadership, empowering the client to cultivate inner resources and make choices that align with their values.

Overall, IFS therapy sees depression as an invitation to explore and heal the wounded parts within, leading to greater self-understanding, emotional integration, and overall well-being.

  • Yes, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) can be used as a therapeutic approach to treat depression. Although EMDR is often associated with trauma therapy, its application has been expanded to address a range of mental health conditions, including depression.

EMDR therapy focuses on the processing and resolution of distressing memories, experiences, or negative beliefs that contribute to depressive symptoms. It involves a structured protocol that incorporates bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, hand taps, or auditory tones, while the individual holds specific aspects of the targeted memory or belief in mind.

During EMDR sessions, the therapist helps the client access and reprocess the distressing memories or beliefs in a safe and controlled environment. This process aims to transform the negative thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations associated with these memories into more adaptive and positive ones.

By addressing and reprocessing the underlying experiences or beliefs that contribute to depression, EMDR therapy can help alleviate depressive symptoms. It allows individuals to gain insight, process unresolved emotions, challenge negative self-perceptions, and develop more adaptive coping strategies.

While EMDR may not be the sole or primary treatment for depression, it can be a valuable component within a comprehensive treatment plan. Combining EMDR with other evidence-based therapies, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or medication, may enhance the effectiveness of depression treatment.

  • Addressing depression from a holistic lens offers a comprehensive and integrative approach that considers the interconnectedness of various aspects of an individual's life and well-being. Instead of relying solely on medication or pharmaceutical interventions, a holistic approach recognizes the importance of addressing the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual dimensions of a person's life.

    • Humanistic therapy or behavioral health counseling allows for open and honest conversations with a trained professional, promoting self-expression, validation, and insight, which can help individuals process emotions, gain clarity, and develop strategies for managing depression.

    • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy sessions can help individuals process and resolve past traumatic experiences or negative memories, potentially reducing the impact of these experiences on depressive symptoms.

    • Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy can aid in exploring and healing inner conflicts and emotional wounds, fostering self-compassion, self-understanding, and overall emotional well-being, which can positively impact depressive symptoms.

    • Incorporating cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) into a treatment plan offers practical tools to challenge negative thoughts and beliefs, reframe perspectives, and develop effective problem-solving skills, enabling individuals to manage depressive symptoms and improve overall well-being.

    • Nutrition counseling can assist in developing a balanced and nourishing diet, ensuring adequate intake of nutrients that support brain health, mood regulation, and overall well-being, thereby positively impacting depressive symptoms.

    • Life coaching can provide guidance and support in setting and achieving personal and professional goals, fostering a sense of purpose, motivation, and empowerment, which can contribute to managing depression and improving life satisfaction.

    • Guidance on dietary supplements from a qualified professional can help identify specific supplements that may support mental health and alleviate certain depressive symptoms when used in conjunction with other treatment modalities.

    • Working with a healthcare professional to receive prescription medication guidance can assist in finding the right antidepressant medication, dosage, and monitoring, helping to alleviate depressive symptoms and restore emotional balance.

    • Incorporating holistic stress-reduction techniques such as mindfulness, relaxation exercises, aromatherapy, or acupuncture into a treatment plan can promote relaxation, reduce stress levels, and support overall mental well-being, contributing to the management of depression.

    • Engaging in spiritual counseling can offer a sense of solace, connection, and purpose, providing individuals with support in exploring and nurturing their spiritual beliefs, which may positively impact their ability to cope with depressive symptoms.
